Alice Cabaniss papers, 1955-2005.

Materials reflect Cabaniss' varied interests as a poet and teacher; collection includes poems, published works, letters, news clippings, vitae, notices of poetry readings, and miscellaneous printed items documenting the career of Alice Cabaniss as a poet, author, and educator. Box 1: poems (arranged alphabetically by title) along with "index notebook"; Box 2: collected stories, "Champagne & Moonpies" and "Chifforobe"; unpublished novel, "Finder's Fee"; poetry collections, "Ruminaria," "A Whistling Girl," "The 'S' Folder," and "Small little Wars"; published versions of Cabaniss' poetry include specimen issues of Kalliope (Winter 1981), CrossRoads: a Journal of Southern Culture (Fall 1992), Echoes (Spr. 1981) and Circus Maximus (Sept. 1977); press clippings and short stories; and transcription of "A Craft Interview with Ted Walker" conducted by Alice Cabaniss, London, 1974. Box 3: biographical information re teaching English and journalism at University of South Carolina-Spartanburg, University of Mississippi, Trident Technical College, College of Charleston, and Charleston area high schools; other activities include organizing poetry readings for Charleston's Piccolo Spoleto festival, ca. 1978-1988; and her research interest in historian William E. Woodward, a native of Ridge Srping (Saluda County, S.C.) who is credited with coining the term, "debunk"; and deposition, 4 Nov. 2004, re Cabaniss' role in planning first integrated meeting of State League of Women Voters in 1962 in Charleston, S.C., "Money talked; we had our first integrated... banquet in the Francis Marion Hotel."
